Chemical and physical principles that are critical to functional responses by organisms to their habitats. Focus is integrative, providing comprehensive training in basic sciences of physics and chemistry as applied to environmental processes, and consequences of these processes for individual performance, populations, and communities. Covers variety of topics in applied chemistry, including proton pumps, carbonate biogeochemistry and ocean acidification, and allometric scaling of metabolism and effects of temperature on physiological function. Fundamentals of boundary-layer physics and their role in organism’s life history. Physics as natural life process, including how organisms are mechanically structures to avoid, resist, or comply to fluid (air and water) motion. P/NP or letter grading.
