<p>Lecture, three hours. Exploration of range of topics in Arabic sociolinguistics, including diglossia and dialect groups in the Arab world, regional variation, codeswitching, language attitudes and ideologies, social identity, bilingualism, digital media and language use, heritage-Arabic speakers, and applied sociolinguistics pertaining to the teaching of Arabic as a foreign language. Examination of language used by some Arabic speech communities in both casual and professional settings, with focus on how language affects social lives and how social organization affects use of language. P/NP or letter grading.</p>

Sociolinguistics of Arabic 

Utilize critical and analytical measures to assess the social phenomena in which language is
involved.

Gain hands-on experience studying sociolinguistic phenomena, including critical evaluation
of relevant literature, developing hypotheses about linguistic and social dynamics, selecting
and using appropriate analytical tools, carrying out an empirical and/or critical analysis of a
set of language data, interpreting the data leading to the write- up of results.

Recognize the complex but intriguing social aspects of Arabic and Arabic use.

Learn the discipline’s key concepts by exploring course materials and engaging with the
readings through individual posts, discussion forums, and in-class activities.
