Building Climates: Special Topics

Understand the built environment as a lens for interpreting the causes, effects, complexities, and potential futures of a changing climate.

Approach climate change as an ongoing, open-ended process and recognize the forms of agency available to effecting positive change.

Map the distinct effects of climate change as they are expressed across planetary, regional, and urban scales.

Situate individual lived experiences within surrounding structures and environmental conditions.

Gain command of key concepts in climate discourse, including the anthropocene, environmental justice, extraction, colonialism, infrastructure, and resilience.

Develop skills of historical and anthropological research and starting points for engaging with climate practice through methods including architectural design, image analysis, and environmental modeling.

Develop writing skills for communicating ideas about climate across distinct disciplinary modes and oriented to distinct audiences. 

Explore distinct disciplinary approaches to climate change spanning fields of design, engineering, urban planning, history, and anthropology.

Establish a foundational literacy in climate science through a familiarity with the physical processes of heating and cooling that transform the earth’s climate.

Recognize an ethical imperative to confront the climate crisis and connect questions of social responsibility to the practices of designing and constructing the built environment.

Be able to interpret the political contexts surrounding approaches to climate change mitigation and corollary differences between different ideas of “solution.”
