<p>Lecture, three hours; discussion, one hour (when scheduled). Hollywood movies and television shows often marginalize performers from Central American, South American, and Native American backgrounds and contain negative stereotypes of them. But in recent times, artists from these communities have risen in cultural prominence and they are challenging the dominant narrative. Examination of the works, performances, and writings of artists who are redefining the diversity of the American experience in the popular imagination. P/NP or letter grading.</p>

Hollywood and Tales of Underrepresented Communities

Students will examine and contemplate the public persona of each of these artists and answer essay questions concerning how responsibly each artist is using their public platform.

Students will examine and contemplate the reasons that these artists and their communities are marginalized in American popular culture and answer essay questions concerning possible reasons.

Students will learn about communities underrepresented in mainstream American popular culture (such as Mexican, South American, Native American and others) from the perspectives of artists and performers from those communities.

Through course readings and written assignments, students will also hopefully improve their analytical, research and writing skills.
