<p>Lecture, three hours. In-depth study of the history of ancient Mesopotamia in 2nd millennium BCE. Focus on the reign of Hammurabi in the Old Babylonian period and the diplomatic exchange seen between the different polities of the Late Bronze Age. Overview of the political, social, and cultural history of Mesopotamia during period of tangled military and diplomatic interactions and intense exchanges that create unique cultural expressions. Examination of more personal perspectives of individuals throughout this period of history through engaging with primary source texts in translation. Concurrently scheduled with course C106B. S/U or letter grading.</p>

Understand the relationships between the different polities in the Late Bronze Age, and how they connected to each other via trade, diplomatic relations, and open military conflict

Gain competency in critically analyzing and range of primary and secondary texts, especially the Amarna diplomatic correspondence of the Late Bronze Age (read in translation)

Gain experience and confidence in research-based writing and analysis, learning to integrate different textual, material, and archaeological evidence 

Gain an understanding of the history of Mesopotamia in the second millennium BCE, with focus on the reign of Hammurabi in the Old Babylonian Period
