<p>Seminar, three hours. Examination of socially manufactured racial constructions of Arab and Muslim communities before and after September 11, 2001. Focus on paradox of how and why Arab/Muslim communities in the U.S. are legally classified as white while simultaneously racialized by state and extra-state forces as others, subjects of suspicion, and threats to Western ideals of liberal democracy. Examination of how Arab/Muslim communities have been targets of state sanctioned violence, exclusion, and repression. Study engages with readings across disciplines, various forms of cultural production, and Arab/Muslim activists and organizers. P/NP or letter grading.</p>
