<p>Lecture, three hours. Requisite: course 100 or 120. Introduction to basic epidemiology of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and unintentional injury. Major risk factors of NCDs including smoking, heavy alcohol consumption, reduced physical activities, diet, and air pollution. Examination of how non-communicable diseases are intertwined with (and often caused by) complex structural issues such as racism, sexism, and ageism by using the social determinants of health (SDOH) framework. P/NP or letter grading.</p>

Understand the basic epidemiology of non-communicable diseases and injuries, including their specific distributions, risk factors, and potential prevention and/or intervention programs.

Measure and describe non-communicable health problems in population groups, including incidence, prevalence, morbidity/mortality rates, and vital statistics.

Have knowledge of the basic concepts and definitions pertaining to each non-communicable disease presented, within the context of the relevant social determinants.

Select the appropriate public health data source to answer specific questions.

Characterize and describe non-communicable diseases and injuries by person, place, time, and by their relevant social determinants.
