<p>Lecture, two hours; laboratory, six hours; outside study, four hours. Requisites: courses 105A, 150A, 157 or 157W, 171A. Limited to seniors. First in two-course aerospace engineering capstone design series. Study of aerodynamics, trajectory analysis, propulsion, computational fluid dynamics, flight control, and instrumentation. Students work in teams to begin their two-term design project. Laboratory modules include structures, trajectory analysis, aerodynamics, propulsion, and sensors. Letter grading.</p>

Aerospace Design Laboratory I

Students learn division of work and shared responsibilities related to product development as part of an engineering team.

Students learn technical communication skills including oral and written.

Students will learn to incorporate appropriate engineering standards into their design and project execution.

Students learn to use a wind tunnel and associated instruments to measure aerodynamic forces (e.g. drag and lift) and compare data with theory or numerical calculations.

Students learn the theoretical principles of aerodynamic forces (e.g. drag and lift) and aerodynamic moments about the center of pressure of a body (e.g. airfoil).

Students will learn about and recognize their professional and ethical responsibilities as engineers.

Students learn the engineering process from concept development, design, analysis, manufacturing, and testing in the context of aerospace applications.

Students learn to use a numerical simulation package to calculate aerodynamic forces (e.g. drag and lift) on a body as well as other thermodynamic flow-field properties.

Students will gain an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors.
