<p>Lecture, two hours; discussion, two hours; laboratory, two hours; outside study, six hours. Requisite: Mathematics 33A. Fundamentals of computer programming taught in the context of Python. Topics include basic data types and control structures, input/output, functions, data visualization, and list- and array-based data structures. Introduction to object-oriented programming. Basic algorithms and data structures including sorting, searching, stacks, queues, heaps, and graph traversal techniques such as depth-first and breadth-first search. Examples and exercises from engineering, mathematics, and physical sciences. Letter grading.</p>

Introduction to Computer Programming with Python

Students will study fundamental algorithms for sorting and searching, and be introduced to essential data structures including stacks, queues, heaps, and basic graph traversal techniques such as depth-first and breadth-first search.

Students will learn the basic concepts of logical operations, arithmetic operations, loops, and conditional statements, and apply them to model engineering systems.

Students will learn to visualize data to communicate effectively with a range of audiences.

Students will learn to write functions, break complex high-level tasks into smaller low-level routines, and use object-oriented programming to organize and structure code effectively.

Students will learn to work with one-dimensional and multi-dimensional data using lists and arrays; read from and write to text files, image files, and other common data formats.
