<p>Laboratory, four hours. Requisites: courses 10, 100A, 100B. Introduction to major learning theories including behaviorism, information processing, and Piagetian constructivism. Analysis of strengths and weaknesses of the theories, and study of their practical implications on teaching practices. For example, how instruction would be designed in a behaviorist perspective; and how that would differ from taking a constructivist approach. Study of how taking a specific theoretical perspective influences what one sees as a researcher or what one does as a teacher. May be repeated once for credit. P/NP or letter grading.</p>

Introduction to Learning Theories

• Apply different learning theories to analyze and evaluate curricular materials, teaching
softwares, and pedagogical practices, identifying their strenghts and areas of improvement.


• Effectively formulate and defend an argument either orally or in writing using research results to support the argument

• Compare and contrast major learning theories across several dimensions including: a) the characterization of learning and of the learner; b) assumptions about the learner; c) pedagogical implications; d) research methods.


• Design and propose alternative curricular materials based on different learning theories.
