To situate the history of 18th-century Europe within broader networks of global trade, diplomacy, and colonialism.

To gain a critical understanding of the European Enlightenment and its legacies in the present. 

To develop a critical vocabulary for writing and speaking about works of art, especially how discussions of artistic form and subject matter can elucidate broader cultural, social, and political histories. 

To learn about key works of art from 18th-century Europe in relation to major transformations that European culture, politics, and society underwent in this period.
