Ink of Imagination: Exploration of Premodern Chinese Literature

Apply the alternative ways of thinking in classical Chinese tradition to think about issues and debates confronting us today, such as questions that arise in our everyday life and media.

Read a body of (unfamiliar) masterpieces of classical Chinese literature, from a wide array of genres including poetry, lyric, prose, narratives, jokes, and letters [by completing weekly readings]

Analyze key literary motifs, figures, themes, and modes of expression through exercising ‘historicized close reading’ [in an expository essay];

Develop skills as a critical and empathetic reader, engage a given text by situating it within its cultural milieu, and put the acquired skills into practice [through lecture attendance, in-class discussions and quizzes]

Experience at first-hand the process of canon formation, the power and responsibility we have in the seemingly simple act of reading and choosing what to read [through the creative project of compiling a poetry anthology]
