COM HLT 171XP - Climate Resilience and Community Action

<p>Lecture, three hours; discussion, one hour. Not open for credit to students with credit for course 171XP. Examination of climate change as an existential threat to human and planetary health, with particular attention to population mental health consequences and their implications for adaptation and mitigation efforts. Draws on recent American Public Health Association policy statements to consider integrative interventions that build individual and community psychological resilience and sustain engagement in climate action. Letter grading.</p>

COM HLT 171 - Climate Resilience and Community Action

Strengthen resilience (inner skills): Apply mindfulness, grounding, and emotional regulation strategies to remain present and resilient when engaging with climate-related stress, uncertainty, and strong emotions.

Become a knowledgeable climate action ambassador (outer skills):
Learn best practices for effective climate communications and advocacy and experience working together on climate advocacy.  


Learn about social justice movements including best practices for community engagement.  Distinguish community engagement from traditional approaches to research and practice.

Build respectful, collaborative relationships with community partners. Gain skills for working with communities and engaging in applied action projects. Communicate effectively and empathetically about climate issues, using evidence-based strategies, deep listening, and epistemic humility to navigate diverse perspectives and misinformation. Help design and execute a community-engaged project grounded in community needs.  

Demonstrate an understanding of interconnectedness—with people, communities, and the natural world—and use this awareness to support compassionate, prosocial, and collaborative engagement.

Identify and respond to ethnical and cultural considerations in community -based work.
