<p>Lecture, two hours; discussion, two hours. Enforced requisite: English Composition 3. Not open for credit to students with credit for course 1C or 4CW. Study of selected texts from Age of Enlightenment to 20th century, with emphasis on literary analysis and expository writing. Course may include texts (or works) by Diderot, Dostoevsky, Flaubert, Goethe, Ibsen, James Joyce, Kafka, Jamaica Kincaid, Garcia Marquez, Rousseau, M. Shelley, Strindberg, Swift, and Voltaire. Consult Schedule of Classes for topics to be offered in specific term. Satisfies Writing II requirement. Letter grading.</p>

Exploring Modern Literature

Develop skills for asking fundamental questions and the critical thinking to answer them as well as tools for presenting our ideas compellingly.  

Follow central issues that have shaped the development of culture and consider crucial themes such as the delicate balance between our rights as individuals and what we owe to our society, or the shifting views of how we value reason versus emotion. 

Develop our capacity to share those answers with one another, to express our own thoughts and to understand those of our colleagues.

Be better able to answer questions about who you want to be and what kind of society you want to shape in our complex, diverse, modern world.  

Explore some of the great social questions by analyzing books by important critical thinkers and writers from the Age of Reason in the 18th Century into our own times.
