Community Futures: Orientation to Community Schools Engagement

Develop community-based action research projects that promote students’ understanding of inquiry design, literature reviews, research ethics, qualitative data collection methods, and qualitative data analysis steps

Apply ethical community engagement practices including asset-based perspectives, self-reflexivity, and respectful and authentic relationship building approaches, with TK-12 students, families, school personnel, and community partners at the UCLA Community Schools

Understand community schooling, in historical and contemporary contexts, including the UCLA Community Schools, and state and national community schools’ movement

Recognize culturally relevant mentorship, teaching, and facilitation methods that promote TK-12 students’ development and success

Think critically about the possibilities and complexities of college access, career preparation, and postsecondary transitions centering the experiences of low-income, students of color, first generation, and immigrant students
